Double glazing has so many benefits: it improves energy efficiency and soundproofing inside your home, not to mention the fact that they look fantastic.
But that great new look can start to deteriorate over time if your windows are not properly cared for.
Luckily, uPVC windows are also famously easy to maintain, and with a little regular care and attention, you can keep your windows looking shiny and new for years.
Equipment
As with anything, it’s important that you use the right equipment for cleaning your windows. fortunately, the materials you need to clean uPVC windows are incredibly simple. There’s no special solution or miracle cloth that will get your glass looking clean and clear, all you need is the following:
- Warm, soapy water (you can also add a drop of vinegar to prevent streaks)
- Soft, non-fluffy and non-abrasive cloths or leather chamois
- Squeegy or sponge
- Window cleaning blades
Cleaning the glass
Cleaning the glass and leaving it streak-free is actually very simple (sorry window cleaners). Apply the soapy water to the glass using the squeegee. Then, with a fluid, ‘S’ shape motion, wipe away the water from the top of the glass to the bottom. With your cloth, wipe away any excess water that may have gathered around the seal before giving the glass a final wipe with another dry cloth.
Cleaning the uPVC frames
Regular cleaning of your window frames is essential to keeping them looking fresh and white. Luckily, as with the glass, this is also very simple. Warm, soapy water will do a perfectly good job here, but there are some specialist uPVC cleaning products available that will definitely give them a good finish. However, you should check the products very carefully as the wrong cleaning product may damage or discolour the plastic.
First, clear away any dust from your frames; be sure to open the windows so you can into all the cracks. You can use a duster for this or the duster attachment of your vacuum cleaner. Then apply the warm soapy water to the frames. If you’re using a sponge, don’t use the scourer side as this could scratch the plastic; stubborn stains, such as bird droppings may require more than one application of the water. Wipe away the water with a cloth, then give it another wipe with a dry cloth before stepping back and enjoying your handiwork.
And it’s just that simple! But whatever you do, don’t put it off, as the longer you leave it the harder it is to clean your windows, and the more likely your frames will be to become discoloured. So make sure you get out there regularly in order to keep your windows gleaming.
